They become even more wicked…

mRdubhāshaNamula durjana
hRdayamulu prasannatā mahima boMdune? ye
llidamuga goni, yaMtaMtaku
madamekkuMgaaka durabhimānamu pērmin.

కం. మృదుభాషణముల దుర్జన
     హృదయములు ప్రసన్నతామహిమఁ బొందునె? యె
     ల్లిదముగఁ గొని, యంతంతకు
     మదమెక్కుంగాక దురభిమానము పేర్మిన్.
      (ఆంధ్ర మహాభారతము, ఉద్యోగపర్వము, ప్రథమాశ్వాసము, 34)

Would the hearts of evil-minded of men
Get convinced by fair-worded conversation?
Being unduly vain, they make all sorts of fun,
Become more ill-minded and wicked even.

పాండవులకు అరణ్యవాస, అజ్ఞాతవాసములు మిగిశాక అప్పుడు ఇక చేయాల్సిన పని గురించి, రాజ్యంలో తమ వంతు భాగాన్ని దక్కించుకోవడానికి అనుసరించవలసిన విధానం గురించి శ్రీకృష్ణ, బలరామాదుల సమక్షంలో అందరూ చేరి మాట్లాడుకుంటున్న సందర్భంలో ద్రుపదమహారాజు మాటలు పై పద్యం.

మంచి హృదయం కలిగినవాడైతే పెద్దవాళ్ళు మంచిగా చెప్పిన మాటలను వెంటాడు. వాళ్లు చెప్పినట్లుగా చేస్తాడు. దుర్యోధనుడు అటువంటి వ్యక్తి కాదన్నది తెలిసినదే. మంచి మాటలను చేతకానివాళ్ళ మాటలుగా తీసుకుని, హేళణగా మరింతగా మదమెక్కినన పద్ధతిలో మాట్లాడుతాడు – అని ద్రుపదమహారాజు చెప్పిన మాటలు.

By nature, some are ill-intentioned. They don’t listen to the words of elders. They always think in the opposite way. After the successful completion of Pandavas’ ‘stay in forests’ for 12 long years and ‘stay in incognito’ for 1 more year, they were discussion the further course action from their side to get their share of the kingdom, in the presence of Srikrishna, Balarama and others. During the discussion, the summary of views expressed by the king Drupada was the above poem.  

King Drupada felt that a good-natured person would listen to the words of the elders and do things as suggested by them. But an ill-natured person like Duryodhana would never listen to the good words said by the elders. He becomes more adament and behaves with uncontrolled wickedness.
