Qualities required to be possessed…

kshamayu nahiMsayou satyamu
samatayu niMdriya jayaMbu Samayu barityā
gamunu dapōlakshaNamulu
gramamuna ninniyunu nūrdhvagati kāraNamul.

క. క్షమయు నహింసయు సత్యము
    సమతయు నింద్రియ జయంబు శమముఁ బరిత్యా
    గమును దపోలక్షణములు
    గ్రమమున నిన్నియును నూర్ధ్వగతి కారణముల్.
    (ఆంధ్ర మహాభారతము, అరణ్యపర్వం, షష్ఠాశ్వాసం,108)

Forgiveness, non-violence, truthfulness, observance
Of equality, control over senses, renouncing comforts
Are qualities of a person immersed in spiritual meditation;
These would finally become reasons for gaining salvation.

క్షమాగుణం కలిగి ఉండడం, హింసాప్రవృత్తికి దూరంగా ఉండడం, ఎల్లప్పుడూ నిజమునే మాట్లాడడం, పేద గొప్ప అనే అంతరం చూపక సమభావంతో ప్రవర్తించడం, ఇంద్రియాలను అదుపులో పెట్టుకోవడం, త్యాగబుద్ధిని కలిగి ఉండడం…వీటినే తపోధనుల ముఖ్యమైన లక్షణాలుగా చెబుతారు. ఈ లక్షణాలన్నీ పుణ్యలోకాలకు మార్గాలుగా కూడా చెప్పబడ్డాయి.

The part left out untranslated by Nannaya Bhattaraka (i.e., more than half of the 4th Canto, 5th and 6th Cantos full) in the AraNya Parvamu of Andhra Mahabharatamu was translated by the poet ErrapragaDa. The above poem was taken from the 6th Canto of the AraNya parvamu.

In simple and easily understandable words, the poem specifies the important qualities required to be possessed by any good human being. Those qualities are forgiveness, not harming any living being, always to be in favour of speaking truth, to see and treat all human beings equally, to have a good control over one’s own senses which are always tempting to go off the right path, renouncing the worldly comforts.

The person who succeeds in possessing these qualities would become more than a good human being. He would, in fact, be treated as a person having Godly qualities and would be revered by all.  

Results do not accrue as per one’s will…

సీ. నీతిమంతులు ధర్మనిరతులు దక్షులు
                నగువారు సేయు కార్యములు గొన్ని
     సిద్ధిఁ బొందవు, దుష్టచిత్తులు క్రూరులై
               చేయఁ గొన్ని విశేష సిధ్ధిబొందు;
     నూరక యుండంగ నొందుఁ గొందఱ విపు
               లార్ధముల్; గొందఱాయాస పడియు
     నిష్ఫలారంభులై నిలుతురు; గొందఱు
               పేదవారికిఁ బ్రజ పెల్లు వొడము

తే. నర్థవంతులు గొందఱ కర్ధి నధిక
     దానములు ధర్మములు సువ్రతములుఁ జేయఁ
     బ్రజలు వుట్టరు; విను మిట్టి భంగి సుమ్ము
     కర్మఫల మాత్మతంత్రంబు గాక యుండు.

నీతిమంతులై ధర్మాన్ని తూ.చ. తప్పక పాటించేవారు చేసే కొన్ని మంచి పనులు ఒక్కొకప్పుడు సఫలం కావు; దుష్టులు, హింసాప్రవృత్తి కలవారు చేసే కొన్ని పనులు ఆశ్చర్యంగా సఫలం చెందుతాయి; కొందరికి విశేషంగా యేమీ శ్రమపడకుండానే సంపద చేకూరుతుంది; కొందరికి ఎంత కష్టపడినా ఆశించిన ఫలం దక్కదు; పేదవాడికి పోషించలేనంతగా సంతానం కలుగుతుంది; ఎంతమందినైనా పోషించగలిగే సంపద కలవాడికి ఎన్ని పూజలు చేసినా పిల్లలు పుట్టరు. ఈ అన్నిటి అర్ధం యేమిటంటే కర్మఫలం ఎప్పడూ మన కోరికను అనుసరించి వుండదు అని.

Deeds of those men who are pious
       and plain-hearted do not get fulfilled at all;
Deeds of those men who are ill-natured
              and bad get results exceedingly well;
To some persons riches accrue even when
             they sit at home doing nothing at all;
To some persons even when the try very hard
             results in the end are always too nil;

Some persons penniless and poor get many children;
Some persons very wealthy do never get any children
Even after indulging in many penances; it is, therefore,
To be known that results as per one’s will accrue never.

As a living example to the saying that ‘first signs of
wisdom that do not appear at the tender age of three,
should not be expected to be seen at the age of thirty’
Prahlada learnt all his teachers wished at three itself!
