Think a while about the state in which the heart feels joy extreme In full concentration without thinking any other things, the senses Experience the utmost pleasure like the flame in a glass lamp shines Undisturbed, the state Vedas called ‘pleasure is the divine supreme!’
The above poem is undoubtedly one if the most popular poems in Telugu Kavya literature.
The poem is taken from the poetic work called ‘Manu charitramu‘ authored by Allasāni peddana, who commanded great respect in the royal court Sri krishnadevaraya of 16th C AD.
Pravarākhya was a common family man who was living happily with his wife, children, and parents. One day a great sage visited his house and after having food in his house the sage gave an extract derived from a plant, which when applied to the feet one would fly away like a bird and could reach any destination he intended to reach.
With the power of the extract he applied to his feet, Pravarkhya reached the Himalayas. He walks all the corners of Himalayas, seeing in wonder the extraordinary beauty of the place. In that process, the extract he applied to his feet got wiped out and when he tried to fly back to his home it didn’t work.
While he was thus confusedly roming among the hills, he was seen by Varudhuni, a young and beautiful woman who lived there, who instantaneously fell in love with him and expressed her desire to have him as her life partner. Pravarakhya did not accede to her request and asked her to leave him to his own fate.
At that juncture, Varudhini, with a view to have a last try to convince him, brought the above concept of ‘ānaMdō brahma‘ (which literally meant ‘happiness is the highest form of divinity’ to the fore and asked Pravarakhya to think about and kindly accept her request.
In case they are hurt in their kindly heart They would get very angry and spell out What sort of curse none would know; hot Tongued are sages, angered soon they get.
King Dushyant was unknowingly casing a deer belonged to the hermitage of the great sage KaNva. On the way he was intercepted by another sage who revealed that the deer belonged to the sage KaNva and that by chasing the deer which was very dear to the heart of the sage KaNva, he was not doing the correct thing.
After listening to the factual position pertaining to the deer, king Dushyant got worried and what he thought in his mind was the essence of the above poem. He thought that in case the sages were unnecessarily hurt, they were capable of spelling out curses that would make even the mightiest king lose his kingdom. Since such was the power of the tongue of the pious sages, one needed to be doubly careful while dealing with them.
Would the hearts of evil-minded of men Get convinced by fair-worded conversation? Being unduly vain, they make all sorts of fun, Become more ill-minded and wicked even.
By nature, some are ill-intentioned. They don’t listen to the words of elders. They always think in the opposite way. After the successful completion of Pandavas’ ‘stay in forests’ for 12 long years and ‘stay in incognito’ for 1 more year, they were discussion the further course action from their side to get their share of the kingdom, in the presence of Srikrishna, Balarama and others. During the discussion, the summary of views expressed by the king Drupada was the above poem.
King Drupada felt that a good-natured person would listen to the words of the elders and do things as suggested by them. But an ill-natured person like Duryodhana would never listen to the good words said by the elders. He becomes more adament and behaves with uncontrolled wickedness.
Narrow down and focus on the one you most like! Every creature in the nature’s creation, form the tiniest…
….small
…. and not so small
have their own way of behaving and living. Nature ensures that, that way of behaving is specific to each creature and is drawn out by the code written in its own chromosome. The creature has no other way than follow the behaviour, the code in the chromosome dictates.
In the case of human beings it is not like that. Nature, as in the case of creatures, doesn’t keep its hold through out a human being’s life. It leaves him or her in their teen age. Every human being has been given a mind of his/her own to think and narrow down on the most liked area of his/her interst.
One has to find out that interst and stick on to it. Varied interests appears glamorous. But it won’t help in the end. It results in jumping. Jumping results in loss of focus.
The fire might be very small in size, just a spark, But when accompanied by the air fast it spreads And becomes a big blaze, good deedsare so alike When supported by God grow without any bounds.
Comparison made in this poem is a very uncommon one. A ‘good-deed’ is compared to the ‘fire-particle’ in this poem. As a small particle of fire when associated with the blowing of air spreads in all directions and becomes a big blaze in a few minutes, a good-deed when associated with the support of the Almighty God would get all the required strength and would grow uninterruptedly and do much good to the mankind.
Water! In the beginning, it was only water everywhere. So people only drank water. It is understandable. Birds, trees… even today… they have no other drink. They only drink water.
My preference, therefore, remained with only a glass of water!
This apart, there are two other reasons that made me favourate for a drop of water.
First One – for its capability to present the idea of ‘Hang on!’ very effectively.
Come what ever may, bring all the energy to the point of holding tightly and ‘Hang on!’ defiantly without dropping onto the earth helplessly.
Now the Second one – for its inimitable way of presenting the idea of ‘non-attachment’ – like the drop of water that appears as part of the leaf, but in reality it is not!
