Feeding the poor….

podalu saMpadalaku nella buTTinillu
nibiDa rōgāgnulaku nella niiradaMbu
vaibhavākaramōksha nivāsa hētu
vnnadāna samāna manyaMbu galade?

గీ. పొదలు సంపదలకు నెల్లఁ బుట్టినిల్లు
    నిబిడ రోగాగ్నులకు నెల్ల నీరదంబు
    వైభవాకరమోక్ష నివాసహేతు
    వన్నదాన సమాన మన్యంబు గలదె?

The birth-place for all the riches that overflow
The water that makes the fire of disease burn out
The grand source that obtains salvation and glow
Is there any other equal to feeding the hungry lot?

ఆకలితో అలమటించేవానికి అన్నం పెట్టడాన్ని మించిన పుణ్యకర్మ మరొకటి లేదని అన్ని ధర్మాలూ చెబుతాయి. అన్ని సంపదలకూ అది పుట్టినిల్లని, కనిపించకుండా బాధించే రోగములనే అగ్నికి అది నీళ్ళవంటిదని ‘మోక్షానికి మార్గమై నివాసహేతువైనటువంటిదైన అన్నదానాన్ని మించినది మరొకటి ఉన్నదా?’ అంటే లేదు అని ఈ పద్యంలో భావం కూడా!

There is no other pious deed than serving food to those who are hungry and struggling to find food. No one disputes this great method of service to the man-kind. In the above poem, Haribhattaraka, the poet who authored Matysa puraNa, said the same thing detailing that it would be the generation point for all the riches a person enjoys and it would also give him salvation and mōksha, which means liberation from the cycle of rebirths.
