Building a kalyaana mandapam attached to the main temple or at a small distance away from the main temple is one of the important features of Vijayanagara style of architecture. They have given utmost importance to make the kalyaana mandapam as attractive as possible and the expertise of the sculptors employed would in fact be put to test in these areas. The unfinished kalyaana mandapam attached to the Veerabhadra temple at Lepakshi is one such instance of decorative architecture.  It would be hard to imagine how this unfinished kalyaana mandapam would have looked had it been completed, but even in its present unfinished state the finesse of the architecture of the sculpted figures on the pillars pleases the beholder’s eye.

The kalyaana mandapam is intended to perform the annual kalyaanam for the divine couple parvati and parameswara. Images of the most of the important amongst the Hindu pantheon, viz., Brahma, Vishnu, Devendra, Agni, Yama etc., and the most revered amongst the rishis, i.e., vasisht and viswaamatr have been sculpted on the pillars of the kalyaana mandapam to make their presence felt when the marriage of this divine couple is performed there annually.
